Rochon, born at Torrance (a suburb of Los Angeles), is the daughter Zelma Staples. Her parents are Samuel Staples a graphic designer and businessman. Cerritos High School, Cerritos California is where she completed her high-school education in 1982. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in arts degree in broadcast journalism 1986 from California State University Dominguez (CSUDH). The subjects she studied were sociology and drama.
